The new facility, designed to meet rigorous standards set by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program, will serve as the centralized processing and consultation hub for radiation dosimetry across the Navy. Its services include monitoring exposure for personnel operating nuclear-powered vessels, supporting medical departments using radiation for diagnostics and treatment, and ensuring safety in industrial and weapons-related applications. With a registry of exposure records dating back to 1947 and covering over 600,000 individuals, the center continues to play a pivotal role in long-term health protection for service members.
This relocation marks the completion of a multi-year modernization effort that was driven in part by mandates from the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure legislation. Despite temporarily operating from an interim site, the center maintained uninterrupted service throughout the transition. The new facility provides improved infrastructure and environmental controls necessary for precise dosimetry operations, reinforcing its role in mission assurance.

Now fully operational in its permanent home, the Naval Dosimetry Center is better positioned to meet future challenges in radiation monitoring. The investment in the new facility underscores a long-standing Navy priority: ensuring radiation readiness and force health protection across a range of operational scenarios. Residents in the Bethesda area should expect no direct changes, but military families can take reassurance in the upgraded safeguards now in place for deployed service members.
