Owners of select Mitsubishi Outlander models may soon need to schedule a service visit due to a newly announced safety recall affecting nearly 200,000 vehicles nationwide. The issue centers on faulty software in the vehicles’ infotainment systems, which can result in a blank screen or frozen display that may cause the rearview camera to fail during reversing—posing a potential safety risk.

Mitsubishi Motors North America filed a safety recall report on June 2, 2025, indicating that 198,940 vehicles are potentially affected. The recall involves two models: the 2022–2024 Mitsubishi Outlander and the 2023–2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Both were equipped with an Alliance In-Vehicle Infotainment (A-IVI) system that may not meet federal safety standards for rear visibility. Though only about 1% of vehicles are estimated to have the defect, the malfunction could impair the driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle when backing up, increasing the risk of an accident or injury.

The issue stems from improperly programmed software that causes the infotainment screen to freeze or go black. According to the recall report, Mitsubishi and its supplier Bosch Corporation identified the problem after receiving six field reports and 358 warranty claims. These included instances of unresponsive audio controls, system reboots, and screen freezes. No injuries or deaths have been reported in connection with the defect.

Vehicles manufactured after April 22, 2025, already include updated software and are not subject to the recall. For all other affected vehicles, owners will receive notification letters beginning June 30, 2025, instructing them to visit a dealership to have the infotainment software reprogrammed free of charge. Mitsubishi is also offering reimbursement for related repair expenses incurred prior to the recall, with a four-year claims window. Vehicle identification numbers (VINs) for impacted models will be searchable starting June 16.

Owners are advised to follow the instructions in the recall notice and contact Mitsubishi’s Customer Relations Department for more information on refunds or service appointments.
