According to a safety recall report submitted by Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 244 electric trucks are being recalled due to a brake system defect that could lead to fires. Affected models include the 2024 and 2025 Mitsubishi Fuso Rizon and FEC series trucks, which are popular in the medium-duty commercial sector. Owners are advised not to drive the vehicles and to park them outside until repairs are made.

The defect involves the electric parking brake actuator, which contains an improperly sized spacer. This flaw prevents the pressure plate from engaging correctly with the coil, generating excess friction and overcurrent. As a result, the vehicles could experience brake dragging, gridlock, or ignition of warning lamps, and in the most severe case, fire. The issue fails to meet United Nations safety regulation UNR13 (5.2.1.2.1), and all vehicles affected are estimated to have the defect.
Mitsubishi Fuso reports that production of compliant vehicles resumed after May 7, 2025, when adjustments were made to reduce the air gap tolerance within the brake assembly. The manufacturer confirmed one warranty claim, with no reported field incidents in the United States, but determined the problem to be safety-critical, prompting the voluntary recall.

Dealers will be officially notified on August 22, 2025, and vehicle owners will receive notifications starting August 29. The recall remedy includes inspecting the trucks for signs of brake dragging and replacing either the EPB actuator or the entire brake assembly depending on the findings. The component supplier, Akebono Brake Industry Co., Ltd. of Japan, was identified as the source of the faulty actuator.
For vehicle owners, this recall means they must cease operating the affected trucks immediately to avoid potential hazards. Fleet operators and small businesses relying on these vehicles may experience service disruptions but are encouraged to follow the remedy schedule to ensure safety and compliance.
