Following the arrest of 40-year-old Daniel Anderson, law enforcement officers, along with members of the Western Maryland Regional Crime Lab, processed the scene. Investigators recovered the shotgun believed to have been used in the attack. According to the department, Officer Dean was hit in the arm, shoulder, face, and head. Though he received immediate medical care at the scene, the extent of his injuries has required at least one surgery so far, with more expected. He remains hospitalized at Meritus Medical Center.

Anderson now faces an extensive list of charges stemming from the June 12 incident, including three counts of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of attempted second-degree murder. He is also charged with multiple counts of first- and second-degree assault, including one specifically for assaulting a law enforcement officer. Additional charges include reckless endangerment, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, illegal possession of a regulated firearm and ammunition, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A total of 22 charges have been filed against him. Anderson is currently being held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center, with a bond review hearing scheduled in district court.

The events unfolded early Thursday morning after police were called to a Hagerstown home for a report of domestic violence. Officers found the suspect’s wife with visible injuries and two children who were unharmed. As officers attempted to take Anderson into custody, he barricaded himself in a locked room and opened fire when police forced entry. Officer Dean was hit and quickly evacuated to an ambulance already on site. After an eight-hour standoff, Anderson surrendered peacefully.

The Hagerstown Police Department expressed gratitude for the support received from the community and cooperating agencies. While Officer Dean continues to recover, the investigation remains ongoing.
