Efforts to contain and clean up a diesel fuel spill in Baltimore’s Harbor East are progressing as state, city, and federal agencies transition from emergency response to a sustained remediation operation. The spill, originating from Johns Hopkins facilities on June 4, remains confined to the marina near the South Central Avenue Bridge. Approximately 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel are estimated to have leaked, according to updates provided by Johns Hopkins. Oversight of the ongoing operation will shift to the Maryland Department of the Environment in collaboration with the United States Coast Guard and Baltimore City officials. Contractors retained by Johns Hopkins will continue the cleanup onsite. Additional measures have been implemented to prevent further spread of the fuel, especially with rain anticipated over the coming days.
Harbor transportation services are experiencing disruptions due to the spill response. Service on the Harbor Connector #1 Line between Maritime Park and Locust Point has been suspended until further notice. Harbor Connector Routes 2 and 3 will maintain operations, but the Water Taxi and Harbor Trolley are also impacted by the closure. To assist affected passengers, the Charm City Circulator has launched a shuttle service between Fleet and Caroline Streets and Key Highway and Hull Street.

Maritime and road traffic near the site are also restricted. Watercraft are advised to avoid the area between Harbor Point and Henderson’s Wharf. Additionally, Central Avenue remains closed to vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists between Lancaster and Point Streets as cleanup activities continue. Residents and commuters are encouraged to monitor updates through the Baltimore City Department of Transportation’s social media channels and website.
