The lithium-ion batteries inside the affected power banks have been linked to overheating and ignition incidents. CPSC has documented nine cases where the devices exploded or caught fire. Notably, one incident resulted in a major fire causing approximately $2 million in property damage, and another involved a consumer sustaining burn injuries. Despite these serious hazards, Shenzhen Xinkewangda Electronics Co. Ltd., the importer operating under the NEWDERY brand, has declined to initiate a recall.

Sold exclusively through Amazon.com, about 17,670 units were available for purchase between March 2023 and November 2024, priced from $27 to $50. The devices are distinguishable by their black casing, yellow cables, the “NEWDERY” branding on the front, and model number “ZHX-PB22” printed on the back. All units were manufactured in China.

In light of the dangers, CPSC is instructing consumers to dispose of the power banks immediately by following local hazardous waste disposal protocols. Lithium-ion batteries like these should not be discarded in regular trash or curbside recycling bins, as they present elevated fire risks. CPSC recommends contacting local municipal hazardous waste facilities for proper disposal procedures. It is advised to confirm in advance whether these centers accept defective lithium-ion batteries, and to seek alternative disposal guidance if necessary.
