Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal Adam Rounds has been selected as the 2024 Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year for Maryland’s Western Region. His outstanding investigative work, community engagement, and commitment to fire prevention earned him the honor. Rounds, who was also nominated for the award in 2022, will compete alongside five regional finalists next month in Ocean City for the statewide “James C. Robertson, Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year” award during the Maryland State Firefighters Convention.

We need your help to stay paywall free

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.

If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.

A native of Garrett County and a graduate of the Eastern Shore Criminal Justice Academy, Rounds joined the Office of the State Fire Marshal in 2020 following over a decade with the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office. In 2024, he conducted 51 investigations—50 related to fires and one involving explosives—and achieved a 100% closure rate for criminal cases. His investigative results include 19 arrests connected to arson, malicious burning, and the destruction of sprinkler systems within state correctional facilities.

Among the key cases attributed to Rounds were two arson incidents on consecutive days in October 2024. In one, a suspect was convicted after driving from Cockeysville to Rocky Gap to set fire to a truck tractor. In the other, a woman accused of setting her former boyfriend’s home ablaze was indicted by a Grand Jury, with the trial scheduled for June 2025.

Beyond investigations, Rounds plays an active role in training and public outreach. He teaches Disaster Preparedness at Allegany College and completed specialized courses in fire fatality investigation, homemade explosives awareness, and tactical medical response for first responders. He also performed more than 100 fire safety inspections and took part in programs like “Fish with a Cop” and smoke alarm installations. His public service extends further as a Grantsville Town Council member and former longtime volunteer firefighter.

Rounds serves as both a field training officer and assistant coordinator of the agency’s Honor Guard, balancing professional dedication with his responsibilities as a husband and father of twin boys.
