As part of a wide-ranging public awareness effort, the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is spotlighting key issues this May, including Mental Health Awareness Month, the kickoff of hurricane season preparedness, and an increased focus on contractor fraud in the wake of recent severe weather across the state. The agency is also promoting a series of educational tools and events to help residents navigate insurance concerns in times of crisis and transition.
The agency has lit a symbolic green light in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, emphasizing the importance of treating mental health as seriously as physical health. Residents are encouraged to seek help when needed and utilize resources such as the national 988 hotline. MIA is also reminding consumers that they can contact the agency’s 24/7 hotline for assistance with denied insurance claims, emergency appeals, or general coverage questions.

In response to the recent tornadoes and severe storms affecting communities across Maryland, the MIA will operate a Virtual Disaster Center on Tuesday, May 20th. The sessions, held from 12 to 2 PM and again from 5 to 7 PM, are open to the public with no registration required. Residents affected by weather-related damage to homes, vehicles, or personal property can join the Zoom meeting or call in for guidance on insurance-related matters.
The agency is also preparing the public for hurricane season, which begins June 1. Residents are encouraged to assess their risks, review insurance policies, and consider flood insurance. A range of preparedness resources is available, including tips for creating a home inventory, understanding storm deductibles, and planning for emergencies.

Coinciding with the increase in storm-related damage, May 19-23 marks Contractor Fraud Awareness Week. MIA is warning residents to be vigilant against fraudulent contractors who may take advantage of storm recovery efforts. Consumers are urged to report suspected insurance fraud and take advantage of educational materials on recognizing scams and protecting personal interests.
Additional campaigns launched this month include Military Appreciation Month, Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and Older Americans Month. Each includes tailored insurance information and resources, including Medicare fraud awareness for seniors and safety guidance for motorcyclists. The MIA also reminds those who recently lost their jobs that COBRA is not the only option for continuing health coverage and encourages comparison with Marketplace plans.
In a push to improve long-term outcomes, the agency continues to promote its Life Insurance Locator Tool, which has helped Marylanders recover millions in unclaimed benefits. Public outreach continues through both in-person events and virtual sessions, with MIA staff offering assistance throughout local communities. The agency is also recruiting new team members and encouraging young professionals to consider careers in insurance and public service.
