Downtown Hagerstown’s performance was reviewed through a combination of self-assessment by its board and staff, and input from local government representatives. The evaluation confirmed that Hagerstown met the rigorous criteria necessary for the national accreditation.
Accreditation signals to stakeholders and funders at all levels that a program is actively contributing to long-term economic revitalization. Main Street America offers two levels of designation—Affiliate and Accredited—with the latter reserved for programs that demonstrate proven success under the Main Street Approach™, a method developed over four decades to help local communities transform historic commercial districts.

In 2024, Accredited Main Street programs nationwide produced significant economic returns, including $7.65 billion in reinvestment, the opening of over 6,300 new businesses, the creation of nearly 34,000 jobs, and the rehabilitation of more than 10,000 historic buildings. These programs also benefited from 1.9 million hours of volunteer support. For every dollar spent on operations, an average of $21.73 was reinvested into their communities.
