To qualify for Accredited status, communities must meet performance benchmarks across six key areas: community engagement, organizational capacity, sustainable funding, strategic programming, economic development rooted in preservation, and demonstrable results. Downtown Hagerstown’s performance was reviewed through a combination of self-assessment by its board and staff, and input from local government representatives. The evaluation confirmed that Hagerstown met the rigorous criteria necessary for the national accreditation.
Accreditation signals to stakeholders and funders at all levels that a program is actively contributing to long-term economic revitalization. Main Street America offers two levels of designation—Affiliate and Accredited—with the latter reserved for programs that demonstrate proven success under the Main Street Approach™, a method developed over four decades to help local communities transform historic commercial districts.
