According to the Department of Homeland Security, 81% of travelers already possess a REAL ID, which has minimized the overall impact of the enforcement rollout. The new measures are part of an effort to verify traveler identities more securely and prevent the use of fraudulent documents. Passengers presenting non-compliant state-issued IDs will be directed to alternate screening areas, where TSA agents will conduct further verification.
The Department emphasizes that these procedures are not expected to cause delays or affect normal TSA processing times for prepared travelers. Those carrying passports, military IDs, or other approved identification will not be impacted. TSA anticipates a gradual increase in the number of individuals obtaining REAL IDs as awareness of the requirements spreads.
