A U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officer shattered expectations and a world record by completing a one-mile run in a 62-pound bomb suit in just 7 minutes and 4 seconds, outpacing the previous Guinness World Record by more than 20 seconds. Capt. Travis G. Chewning-Kulick, commander of the 752nd Ordnance Company (EOD), completed the feat in front of fellow Soldiers and leaders from the 79th Ordnance Battalion (EOD), based out of Fort Riley, Kansas. The previous record of 7:24.21 was held by Mark Gibbs of the United Kingdom. Chewning-Kulick’s record-setting run was the result of focused physical training and preparation, including bomb suit time trials to adjust equipment and build confidence.
The 752nd EOD Company, part of the 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives (CBRNE) Command, regularly deploys from Fort Cavazos to respond to hazardous threats across Texas and beyond. During Chewning-Kulick’s nearly two-year command, the unit has supported high-level missions with the U.S. Secret Service and participated in multiple training rotations at the National Training Center. He is expected to hand over command to Capt. Andrew Z. Bejean of Rockville, Maryland, in June.

Chewning-Kulick, a native of Syracuse, New York, and 2017 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, is set to return to his alma mater to teach mechanical engineering. He emphasized the importance of physical fitness for EOD technicians, noting that the job demands high endurance and capability under pressure. His record run, he said, was a way to honor and motivate fellow EOD Soldiers while strengthening unit morale.
Command Sgt. Maj. Dave Silva, senior enlisted leader for the 20th CBRNE Command, praised Chewning-Kulick’s dedication, calling it a reflection of the exceptional commitment and capability required in the EOD field. The 20th CBRNE Command is the Defense Department’s lead unit for handling the world’s most dangerous threats.
