In a telling display of political grandstanding, Rep. April McClain Delaney of Maryland’s 6th Congressional District recently announced meeting with a group of West Virginia residents concerned about federal program funding. While Delaney proudly broadcast her willingness to represent voters who live outside her jurisdiction, her actions reveal a sharp contrast in how she engages with constituents in her own district. Behind the scenes, the congresswoman has developed a reputation for holding secretive town halls, accessible only to pre-screened supporters via private email invites and further screening of questions through a moderator, making open dialogue with the broader public nearly impossible.

According to Delaney’s own social media post, West Virginians — frustrated by a lack of access to their own representative — turned to her office to advocate for programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, and Head Start. Delaney, who is not their elected representative, used the moment to take a swipe at Republicans, alleging they are avoiding their voters. Yet ironically, Delaney herself has avoided public accountability by holding constituent events at undisclosed locations, where access is tightly controlled. Her office refuses to disclose these event details to unvetted members of the public, effectively shielding her from the kind of criticism she levies against others.
This double standard calls into question the sincerity of her outreach. While she decries what she calls “nonsensical funding cuts” and appeals for bipartisan cooperation, her own engagement practices suggest a preference for echo chambers over open forums. Delaney’s selective accessibility undercuts her rhetoric about transparency, representation, and “common ground solutions,” especially when conservative constituents within Maryland’s 6th District find it harder to speak with their representative than voters from a neighboring state.

The optics of this situation are hard to ignore. Delaney’s willingness to advocate for non-constituents — while filtering who in her own district gets to ask questions — reflects a growing trend among some lawmakers to manage appearances rather than embrace authentic dialogue. It may play well on social media, but voters are increasingly seeing through the carefully crafted narratives. The people of Western Maryland deserve a representative who is just as accessible to them as she is to out-of-state visitors.
