The incident took place at approximately 2:23 a.m. when state troopers from the Golden Ring Barrack responded to a reported two-vehicle crash on the inner loop of I-695. Preliminary findings indicate that Dunkley had pulled his Toyota Tacoma onto the shoulder and exited the vehicle to replace a flat tire. While doing so, he was hit by a red Toyota Tacoma, model year believed to be between 2005 and 2012. The driver of the red pickup truck fled the scene and has not been located.

Dunkley was transported by ambulance to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was later pronounced dead. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is heading the investigation, which remains ongoing. Authorities are seeking public assistance in identifying the suspect vehicle or driver involved in the collision.
