In a bureaucratic blunder that somehow feels right at home, the Monocacy County, Maryland Commissioners have officially declared Friday, April 11, 2025, as “All Fools Day.” The declaration, originally intended for April 1—also widely recognized as April Fools’ Day—was the result of a clerical error in the county meeting agenda. Rather than amend the date or acknowledge the mistake, the commissioners opted to pass the resolution as written, citing “momentum” and “vibe consistency” as primary reasons.

The misstep stemmed from a typo in the official calendar circulated to county officials ahead of their March 28 meeting, which mistakenly listed the prank-themed holiday on April 11 instead of April 1. By the time anyone noticed, the resolution had already been typed, formatted, printed, laminated, and ceremonially read aloud. One commissioner reportedly shrugged and said, “Close enough,” before the board voted unanimously to adopt the holiday on its new, arbitrary date.
To honor the spirit of the newly minted “All Fools Day,” the county government has encouraged residents to engage in “lighthearted mischief,” such as switching coworkers’ desk chairs or leaving vaguely threatening Post-it notes in public restrooms signed only “The Mayor.” Local schools will remain open, though students are being urged to only pull pranks that are “funny, not felonious.” The sheriff’s department has issued a reminder that while April 11 may now be a day of jest, traffic laws will still be enforced “reluctantly but legally.”

The unorthodox move has drawn amused reactions from residents, with some applauding the commissioners’ willingness to lean into the error rather than correct it. “Honestly, it tracks,” said one Monocacy local, adding that the county government has “always had main-character energy when it comes to public embarrassment.” Meanwhile, others have questioned whether it sets a precedent for future holidays based entirely on mistakes. In response, one commissioner hinted that “Arbor Day will fall on whatever Tuesday the printer runs out of ink.”
At press time, the county was reportedly considering launching an official “Oops Calendar” for 2026, in which every holiday is scheduled with intentional ambiguity.
