A structure fire on Brice Hollow Road in Cumberland caused significant damage Wednesday afternoon, resulting in minor injuries to a resident and the deaths of a dozen pets. The blaze, which originated in a bedroom, was determined to have been started by an accidental electrical malfunction involving a power strip.

At approximately 12:45 p.m., fire crews responded to a one-alarm fire at a one-story single-family home located at 15600 Brice Hollow Road. The District 16 Volunteer Fire Department led the response, with 35 firefighters working to control the fire within 25 minutes. The fire caused an estimated $75,000 in damage. There were no smoke detectors or sprinkler systems in the home at the time of the incident.
One resident, who discovered the fire, sustained minor injuries and was transported to UPMC Western Maryland Hospital for treatment. Tragically, 12 dogs were found dead inside the residence.

The homeowner, identified as Melissa Fazenbaker, is receiving assistance from the American Red Cross following the incident. No arrests were made in connection with the fire. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of working smoke alarms and proper electrical safety to help prevent similar incidents.
