As Easter approaches, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is reminding travelers that cascarones, or confetti-filled eggshells, are restricted to 12 per passenger. These eggshells, which may be decorated, etched, or painted, must be clean, dry, and completely free of any egg residue to be allowed into the United States. Cascarones may contain confetti or other non-regulated items, but improper handling or contamination could result in the spread of dangerous avian diseases.

CBP restricts the importation of cascarones to prevent the spread of virulent Newcastle disease and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), both of which can have devastating effects on bird populations. Virulent Newcastle disease is highly contagious and fatal, affecting a wide range of bird species by attacking their respiratory, nervous, and digestive systems, with a mortality rate of up to 90%. HPAI is similarly dangerous, causing extremely high mortality rates, particularly among turkeys, and posing a threat to chickens, ducks, quail, and other bird species. The spread of these diseases can significantly disrupt trade and agriculture by imposing restrictions on poultry products from affected areas.
Fresh eggs, raw chicken, and live birds or poultry remain prohibited from Mexico due to ongoing concerns over virulent Newcastle disease and HPAI. Travelers attempting to bring in these or other restricted agricultural items without declaring them may face delays and fines ranging from $300 to $1,000. CBP agriculture specialists at land, air, and sea ports, including Laredo, remain vigilant in their efforts to prevent harmful pests and diseases from entering the United States.
