U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is reminding travelers that raw eggs from Mexico are not allowed into the United States, citing a sharp increase in the number of prohibited agricultural products intercepted at border crossings. The San Diego Field Office has reported a 158% rise in egg interceptions since fiscal year 2024. Failure to declare such items can result in fines of up to $10,000.

The surge in egg seizures highlights concerns over disease transmission and the protection of U.S. agriculture. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has warned that a severe outbreak of avian influenza has affected millions of domestic birds, driving up egg and poultry prices. Contaminated agricultural products, including soiled bird cages or used egg cartons, can contribute to the spread of diseases such as Virulent Newcastle disease.
Travelers are required to declare all agricultural products upon arrival. Prohibited items include fresh eggs, raw chicken, and live birds. Food items that are permitted must be for personal use only and must be transported through passenger ports of entry. Commercial food imports must go through designated cargo facilities to ensure proper inspection and compliance.
