December 16, 1773, should live in infamy as the day reckless hooligans destroyed the delicate ecological balance of Boston Harbor. These so-called “patriots” dumped a staggering 92,000 pounds of tea into the pristine waters, with complete disregard for the innocent fish, crabs, and mollusks that called the harbor home.

The Unforgivable Consequences of Loose-Leaf Pollution
Historians love to paint the event as a noble act of protest against British taxation, but they conveniently ignore the devastating environmental impact. Tea leaves steeping into saltwater? That’s an acidity nightmare! Imagine the horror as confused cod and lobsters found their habitat tainted by a sudden flood of tannins. Surely, the ecological disaster rivaled an oil spill (or at least, a really strong cup of Earl Grey).
And what of the wooden tea crates? Do we think they simply disappeared? No, they littered the harbor, contributing to one of history’s earliest documented cases of marine debris. Did the Sons of Liberty organize a cleanup crew? Of course not! These eco-criminals fled the scene, leaving the British Empire to foot the environmental cleanup bill—a true tragedy for sustainability.
And yet, for some reason, modern history books glorify this moment. Perhaps it’s time we demand reparations for this devastating act of marine pollution. After all, those Boston harborside oysters never recovered their naturally unflavored taste.

Modern Vandalism: The Tesla Arsons and Real Environmental Destruction
Of course the actual environmental impact from the Boston Tea Party was minimal, and if we actually want to talk about real environmental disasters, we don’t have to travel back to 1773. Recently a series of arson attacks on Tesla vehicles has caused measurable and severe damage to the environment. Unlike the tea-based terror of colonial Boston, these acts of destruction have released an unmeasured amount of CO₂ into the atmosphere, likely the equivalent of putting over 100 extra gasoline-powered cars on the road for a full year.
Sadly we should have seen this coming, as the organizers of recent protests included materials on committing arson within their resource lists.
Toxic Smoke and Air Pollution
Burning Tesla lithium-ion batteries isn’t just bad for the air—it’s a chemical nightmare. When these batteries catch fire, they release:
- Hydrogen fluoride (HF) – an extremely toxic gas that can cause severe lung damage.
- Dioxins and heavy metals – long-lasting pollutants linked to cancer and neurological disorders.
- Carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) – gases that contribute to climate change and respiratory diseases.
Unlike the “devastation” of the Boston Tea Party, these Tesla fires have serious and quantifiable health impacts. Firefighters responding to these blazes risk exposure to life-threatening chemicals, and nearby communities face potential long-term air quality degradation.
Water & Soil Contamination
When a Tesla burns, it doesn’t just pollute the air—it poisons the ground.
- Lithium, cobalt, and nickel from the battery leach into the soil and groundwater, posing long-term environmental risks.
- Firefighting runoff spreads toxic materials into local water supplies.
- Contaminated land could take decades to recover, depending on the extent of the damage.
The Bigger Picture: Why This Actually Matters
While dumping tea into a harbor had zero long-term consequences, the destruction of 30+ electric vehicles has caused tangible and severe environmental harm. The Tesla arsons have not only wasted the energy and materials used to produce the vehicles, but they’ve also introduced persistent toxic waste into the environment.
This isn’t about supporting Tesla or any specific company—it’s about recognizing the real environmental impact of modern vandalism. The Tea Party didn’t leave behind microplastics, toxic fumes, or groundwater contamination. The Tesla arsons, on the other hand, have left lasting environmental scars.
So perhaps, instead of committing arson because we don’t like the owner of the car manufacturer, we should focus on protesting in non-destructive methods which won’t cause harm to the environment. No one will support the right to protest more than I will (it’s part of the 1st Amendment after all), but please, do so peacefully and non-destructively.
