A new NIH-funded study suggests that uric acid may improve recovery outcomes following acute ischemic stroke. Conducted in a rodent model, the research demonstrated that animals treated with intravenous uric acid exhibited better sensorimotor function and higher survival rates compared to control groups. While some measures, such as brain damage reduction, were not significantly improved, the results indicate potential benefits for human clinical trials.

Led by researchers at the University of Iowa, the study utilized a diverse set of rodent models, including older, young, and obese mice, as well as rats with hypertension. The findings revealed that uric acid was effective across all groups, suggesting it could benefit a wide range of stroke patients, including those with preexisting health conditions. Currently, stroke treatments focus on restoring blood flow, but not all patients experience full recovery. If uric acid proves successful in human trials, it could enhance existing therapies by providing additional protection to brain tissue.
The research was part of the NIH’s Stroke Preclinical Assessment Network (SPAN), a program designed to evaluate potential stroke treatments using clinical trial methodologies such as randomization and blinded analysis. Among six treatments tested, uric acid was the only one to demonstrate efficacy in preclinical trials. These findings support further exploration into uric acid’s potential as an add-on therapy for stroke patients.

The study was funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. As a leading cause of disability and death in the United States, ischemic stroke remains a critical area of research. The potential of uric acid to improve patient recovery could mark a significant advancement in stroke treatment.
