The issue stems from a production error at Hyundai Transys Georgia Powertrain West, the gearbox supplier. A steel ball designed to seal a hydraulic fluid passageway within the gearbox was not pressed to the required depth, potentially causing failure. Volkswagen first detected the problem on November 20, 2024, at its Chattanooga facility. The supplier conducted an extensive root cause analysis and operational testing to confirm the defect. A single dealer complaint related to the issue was reported before the recall decision was made on February 5, 2025.

Volkswagen will replace the defective transmissions at no cost to owners. The company has also established a reimbursement program for affected customers. The new gearbox part number, 09H.300.035.N, does not contain the defect. Dealers were notified on February 14, 2025, while owners will receive notification by April 11, 2025. Production corrections were implemented in November and December 2024, including a daily check and laser measurement of the steel ball height.
