The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) recently hosted STEM-focused activities for middle school girls at Governor Thomas Johnson Middle School in Frederick, Maryland. The events, held on January 15 and 22, were part of the Sisters Wholesome Aspiring towards Greatness (SWAG) program under the Empowering Community Leaders Network (ECLN), a nonprofit dedicated to fostering leadership development in young students. USAMRIID research microbiologist Raina Kumar led a session titled “Exploring DNA: the code of life,” where students learned about bioinformatics and its role in understanding genetic information. The presentation highlighted how DNA sequencing helps scientists identify traits and solve real-world problems in health and agriculture. Another workshop, led by USAMRIID’s Chief of Pathology, Lt. Col. Diana Hoffman, along with histology laboratory manager Holly Bloomfield and research program administrator Michelle Richards, introduced students to biosafety level 3 and 4 laboratory procedures, emphasizing the importance of safety in biological research.
The outreach program aimed to not only educate students but also inspire them to explore careers in STEM fields. Many participants expressed enthusiasm for the workshops, noting that the interactive team-based activities helped them better understand the material. One student from West Frederick Middle School shared that learning from professionals in various scientific fields encouraged her to consider new possibilities for her future.

USAMRIID officials emphasized the value of such educational initiatives in building students’ confidence and leadership skills. By exposing young learners to hands-on scientific experiences and real-world applications, the program seeks to empower the next generation of scientists and researchers. The positive feedback from participants has encouraged USAMRIID volunteers to continue their commitment to STEM outreach in the community.
