A Cumberland man has been charged with arson following a fire earlier this month at the local YMCA. Authorities determined the fire, which was quickly extinguished by tenants, was intentionally set in a third-floor apartment.

Firefighters responded to the Cumberland YMCA on Baltimore Avenue just before 3 p.m. on February 7. Upon arrival, they learned that residents had already put out the fire. Investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal, with help from the Cumberland Police Department, identified 63-year-old Donald Lee Martin, Jr. as the suspect. Martin was taken to UPMC Western Maryland for a medical evaluation before being formally charged.

Martin faces multiple charges, including attempted first- and second-degree arson and reckless endangerment. He is currently being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center. Officials confirmed that no injuries occurred, but the fire caused approximately $1,000 in damages. At the time of the incident, more than 60 people were inside the YMCA shelter, which provides services for unhoused individuals. An additional 22 women were housed in a connected building.
