Maryland State Police are increasing enforcement efforts across the state to prevent aggressive, distracted, and impaired driving during Super Bowl weekend. Troopers from all 23 barracks, including the specialized State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort (SPIDRE) team, will be conducting saturation patrols on roadways with a history of impaired-driving crashes. The initiative is supported by funding from the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office.

During last year’s Super Bowl weekend, state troopers made 81 DUI arrests and issued more than 5,700 citations and warnings. They also responded to 40 crashes. In an effort to reduce similar incidents this year, authorities are emphasizing safety precautions. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using public transportation, or relying on a ride-share service if they plan on consuming alcohol. The police also urge individuals to avoid texting while driving, remain alert on the road, and move over or slow down for any vehicles displaying warning signals. If an impaired driver is suspected, the public is advised to call 911.
