Authorities in Waynesboro are alerting residents about a recent scam where an individual was tricked into attempting to move money under false pretenses. Upon calling the number, the individual was connected to someone claiming to be Microsoft support. The scammer alleged that the victim’s computer had been hacked 34 times and that unauthorized transactions had been attempted on their bank account. To resolve the issue, the scammer advised the victim to withdraw all funds from their savings account so Microsoft could secure and transfer the money to a new, safe account. The victim was then instructed to deposit the cash into a supposed “machine” at Turkey Hill.
Police are warning residents to be cautious of such scams, urging them not to call numbers displayed in unexpected pop-ups, respond to suspicious emails, or provide personal or financial information to unverified sources. Scammers often use tactics like these to create urgency and manipulate victims into transferring money. Authorities advise that official companies like Microsoft do not request money transfers or gift card purchases to resolve security issues.
