Waynesboro police are alerting residents about a recent scam attempt involving fraudulent phone calls from individuals posing as representatives of a national retailer and the Social Security Administration. A local resident reported receiving a call from someone claiming to be an employee of Walmart, alleging that the victim’s identity had been stolen and used for fraudulent purchases at the store. The caller provided a case number and transferred the victim to another individual claiming to be with the “Social Security Department.”

During the call, the scammer falsely stated that the victim had multiple bank accounts, credit cards, and addresses linked to criminal activities, including money laundering and drug trafficking. The caller even referenced a supposed investigation led by “Officer Morris” of the Waynesboro Police Department. The victim was then instructed to wire a large sum of money to resolve the issue, with a promise of partial reimbursement.

The complainant, suspecting fraudulent activity, contacted local authorities and confirmed that no such officer existed within the Waynesboro Police Department. Realizing the scam, the individual ended the call and reported the incident. Law enforcement officials are urging residents to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited calls and to avoid sharing personal or financial information with unknown individuals.
