Scammers Exploiting Amber Alert System to Target Parents and Citizens

Authorities have uncovered a disturbing scam targeting parents and concerned citizens by exploiting the well-known Amber Alert system. The fraudulent scheme, first identified by the California Highway Patrol on January 6, involves scammers impersonating representatives of the Amber Alert system, seeking sensitive personal information under the guise of protecting children. Officials from TSERA Special Police warn this scam could spread to other states and urge the public to remain vigilant.

Scammers claim to enroll families in a non-existent “Amber Alert database,” collecting personal details such as names, Social Security numbers, and even biometric data like fingerprints or photos. Some have attempted to arrange in-home visits to strengthen their deception. Victims are sometimes asked to pay fees or make donations, despite the Amber Alert system having no associated costs or registration processes.

Authorities stress that the Amber Alert system operates solely through law enforcement channels after a missing child report meets strict criteria. No government agency will proactively contact individuals to collect personal data or arrange home visits for this purpose. Scammers may spoof caller IDs and email addresses to appear legitimate, adding another layer of complexity to their deception.

To avoid falling victim, officials recommend verifying unsolicited calls or messages before sharing personal information. Caller ID spoofing is common, and even seemingly legitimate contacts should be verified by calling the official number of the agency in question. Avoid clicking on links in unexpected texts or emails, which could lead to phishing sites or malware.
