The incident was reported at 3:04 PM, and firefighters from the Delmar Fire Department arrived promptly, controlling the blaze within 10 minutes. Fifteen firefighters responded to the single-alarm fire, with smoke alarms in the home alerting the occupants, who then discovered the fire. The townhome, owned by Matthew Robinson, sustained an estimated $1,000 in structural damage and $500 in content loss.
The preliminary investigation determined the fire was accidental, caused by discarded smoldering paper in the garage trash can. Smoke alarms in the property were present and activated, but no fire alarm or sprinkler systems were installed. No arrests were made in connection with the incident.
