Responding officers from the Hagerstown Police Department were present in the area for the Mummer’s Day Parade. They were alerted to the fire at 6 E. Lee Street and quickly confirmed its presence. The officers took immediate action, forcing entry into the residence and successfully extinguishing the blaze using a fire extinguisher before the arrival of the fire department.

The swift response of the police officers, however, led to five of them being transported to Meritus Medical Center for treatment of smoke inhalation. One officer required further medical attention and was subsequently transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center. The homeowner, Theany Tor, was listed as the occupant, and fortunately, no occupants were displaced by the fire.

The fire caused an estimated $3,000 in damage to the structure and $2,000 to the contents. The townhome was not equipped with a smoke alarm or a fire alarm system. The Hagerstown Fire Department responded with approximately 30 firefighters and brought the fire under control in just three minutes.
