The contract was secured under the county’s sole-source provisions, which allow such arrangements when a single provider meets specific requirements or when compatibility with existing systems is critical. The services include licensing for the Sentinel One cybersecurity suite and 24/7 monitoring with incident response capabilities.
However, it is important to note that contrary to the purchase agreement, SentinelOne is not the only provider of Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) and continuous monitoring services. The cybersecurity market includes multiple vendors offering comparable solutions, such as CrowdStrike, Microsoft, Sophos, Palo Alto Networks, and others, each providing variations of EDR capabilities and monitoring options tailored to different needs and environments. It is unknown why Washington County Government did not feel any other vendors offered the needed services, as this criteria is not specified in the county’s report on the purchase.
The agreement commits the county to pay $7.20 per agent monthly, based on a minimum of 1,101 agents. This results in a monthly cost of $7,927.20 and an annual cost of $95,126.40. Funding for the first year of the contract was allocated in the Information Systems Department’s budget.
