YouTube has permanently banned Shaun Porter, a prominent activist and content creator, from its platform as of November 20, 2024. Porter’s channel, Shaun Porter News, which had garnered over 150,000 subscribers and accumulated more than 100 million views, was taken down after receiving three strikes for alleged violations of YouTube’s policies. This marks the second time Porter’s channel has been removed; however, unlike the previous instance earlier this year, when the ban was overturned after an appeal, the current removal appears to be final.

Porter explained the incidents leading to his ban, detailing two of the three strikes his channel received. One strike was for a post critical of a local attorney, Kevin Karpinski, which included language deemed inappropriate by YouTube’s guidelines. Another involved a photo of Washington County Circuit Court Judge Kirk Downey, which was flagged for allegedly “depicting cruelty to animals” according to Porter, although this reason seems somewhat questionable. Porter dismissed this claim as a clear misunderstanding, asserting that the image did not violate any policies. The final strike, Porter claims, came without explanation or notification, leaving him unable to appeal or address the alleged infraction.
Despite his frustration with YouTube, Porter has expressed little concern about the ban, focusing instead on redirecting his content to other platforms. He pointed out significant success on X (formerly Twitter), where his videos have reached larger audiences compared to YouTube. He also continues to post regularly on TikTok and Facebook, with plans to expand his presence further in the coming months. Porter indicated that he will ramp up his activity on these platforms in January to coincide with preparations for the next election cycle, a pivotal period for his activism.

Porter remains unapologetic and steadfast in his critique of YouTube’s moderation practices, describing them as inconsistent and overly reliant on artificial intelligence. He views his ban as part of a broader issue with content moderation on large tech platforms, which he believes often lack transparency and fairness. While some argue that YouTube’s actions are necessary to uphold community standards, others see this as an example of excessive enforcement potentially stifling free speech.
Porter’s shift to alternative platforms reflects a broader trend among creators who are increasingly frustrated with restrictive policies and the inconsistent enforcement practices of major tech platforms. This issue resonates with others who have faced similar challenges, including Radio Free Hub City. Our organization has experienced censorship on Meta platforms, such as Facebook, not due to controversial content but because of malfunctioning AI detection algorithms. These errors have flagged innocuous articles, including coverage of the transition to coinless parking meters in Hagerstown and reports on criminal convictions sourced directly from law enforcement press releases. Additionally, YouTube’s ContentID system has repeatedly misidentified original music licensed by Radio Free Hub City as belonging to other entities, further complicating our efforts to distribute content. As a result, like Porter, we have been forced to migrate much of our content to alternative platforms such as X and Rumble, where we aim to continue engaging with our audience without the disruptions caused by flawed moderation and detection systems.
