HAGERSTOWN, MD News (11/4/2024) – Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) has announced the recipients of the Gold Compass Award for the first marking period of the 2024-2025 academic year. This award honors outstanding staff members who exemplify WCPS’s core values, which include Academic Excellence, Engagement, Growth Mindset, Belonging, Well-Being, and Community. Six employees across various roles were recognized for their exceptional contributions to their schools and communities.

Sonia Vanegas, a Multilingual Community Teacher Specialist at the International Welcome Center, was recognized for her dedication to Engagement, Well-Being, and Community. She plays a crucial role in creating a welcoming environment for multilingual students and their families, ensuring they feel supported and included.

Ashley Vascik, a history teacher at Boonsboro High School, was awarded for her commitment to Academic Excellence. Vic Crabill, Head Custodian II at Sharpsburg Elementary, was honored for his focus on Belonging and Well-Being. Known for his positive interactions with students and staff, Crabill helps maintain a safe and welcoming school environment, contributing significantly to school morale and safety.
