Under Maryland law, local boards of elections meet eight days prior to the start of Early Voting to begin this process, which is conducted in the presence of bipartisan canvass members. The process involves multiple stages to ensure accuracy, with all political parties able to observe. Canvassing will not be conducted on Election Day, but mail-in ballots postmarked on or before November 5 will continue to be counted.
Maryland State Administrator of Elections, Jared DeMarinis, emphasized the importance of starting early to ensure the accuracy and transparency of the election process. “October 15 is the first day in a lengthy and deliberative process of canvassing every vote cast in the 2024 General Election,” DeMarinis said. He underscored that the canvassing process is done openly and in a secure manner, giving Marylanders confidence in the integrity of their elections.

The results from mail-in ballots will not be made public until after the polls close at 8 p.m. on Election Day.
In Washington County, the first day of the mail-in ballot canvass took place at the Washington County Election Center in Hagerstown. Starting at 10:00 a.m. on October 15, the Board of Canvassers began reviewing and counting the returned ballots. As part of the process, all canvass members are required to sign a confidentiality agreement, ensuring that no results are released until the official close of polls on November 5.
The canvassing process in Washington County, like elsewhere in Maryland, follows strict protocols to ensure transparency and security.
