According to the SBE, some registered Maryland voters have reported receiving a fraudulent text message that falsely claims the recipient is not registered to vote. The message then directs them to click on a non-official link, urging immediate registration. The content of the message reads:
“URGENT: To vote in the upcoming election, you MUST be registered, but public records show you’re not registered at [voter address]. Click the link to register before the deadline: [non .gov link]/4VczM Reply Stop to end. AC”

State Administrator Jared DeMarinis expressed concern over the incident, calling such scams a serious threat to the integrity of the electoral process.
“Election scams are a direct threat to the legitimacy of the electoral process. They are designed to steal identities, sow distrust in the election administration, and undermine confidence,” said DeMarinis. “With election scams and disinformation on the rise nationwide, I encourage every Marylander to be vigilant of any election information sent by phone, mail, and email.”

DeMarinis reminded voters that the official SBE text messages are sent from the number (833) 572-1128 and will only include links to websites with the “.gov” domain. He emphasized that SBE will never request personal information through text.
For voters seeking to verify their registration status or get accurate information regarding the upcoming election, DeMarinis recommended visiting the official SBE website at www.elections.maryland.gov. The website offers trusted resources on voter registration, polling locations, mail-in ballot statuses, and other voting options. Voters can also stay informed by following SBE on social media platforms for real-time updates.
In response to the growing threat of disinformation, SBE has established a portal where voters can report suspected election-related scams or misinformation. Voters can file reports at SBE’s disinformation reporting portal.
The Maryland State Board of Elections continues to stress the importance of remaining alert to potential scams, particularly in light of the critical role accurate voter information plays in the upcoming election.
