Residents and trail users can access the survey online at arcg.is/Xv9, where they are encouraged to provide feedback on possible routes for the trail as well as suggest key destinations such as shopping centers, parks, and downtown areas. The survey will remain open through October 15.

In addition to the survey, the FCMPO is organizing an open house on October 2 at 5 p.m. at the Franklin County Administration Building, located at 272 N. Second St., Chambersburg. This event will allow community members to voice their opinions and discuss the project with planners and officials.

The survey and open house are key elements of the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail Feasibility Study. This study, conducted by the FCMPO in collaboration with the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail Council, aims to assess the feasibility of a 10- to 12-mile trail extension from Shippensburg to Chambersburg. The study also explores the potential to connect this extension to the existing Chambersburg Rail Trail.

The feasibility study will evaluate several critical factors, including possible connections to current trails, anticipated usage patterns, and the economic benefits of the expanded trail. Public feedback is an essential component of the planning process, helping to shape the future route and features of the trail.

Steve Thomas, director of Franklin County’s planning department and member of the FCMPO’s technical advisory committee, emphasized the importance of community participation. “The FCMPO is seeking to engage all users of active transportation: students, workers, seniors, business owners, and tourists,” said Thomas. “By working together to define our goals, we can begin identifying the potential placement of the trail extension and the best way for it to benefit all local residents and visitors. This trail will be a positive step toward improving Franklin County’s recreation options and economic development potential.”

The study is being guided by a steering committee made up of local stakeholders, including community, health, and recreation representatives. Technical consulting assistance is being provided by Michael Baker International Inc., a firm experienced in infrastructure and transportation projects.

Currently, the multiuse CVRT stretches for 13 miles between Shippensburg and Newville, following the former path of the Cumberland Valley Railroad. The trail, which serves approximately 100,000 users annually, is part of the larger 9/11 National Memorial Trail network.

Long-term plans for the CVRT envision not only a connection to the Chambersburg Rail Trail but also an eventual link to the C&O Canal Towpath in Washington County, Maryland, creating a more extensive trail network for the region.
