The fire was first discovered by a passerby, who alerted emergency services. The Hagerstown Fire Department responded promptly with six firefighters arriving on the scene. Upon arrival, the fire had already been extinguished, and no additional fire suppression was required. There were no reported injuries or fatalities resulting from the incident.

The area of origin has been identified as the exterior of the vehicle, specifically at the gas fill inlet. Preliminary investigations by fire officials suggest that the fire was incendiary in nature, caused by an open flame introduced to combustible material inserted into the gas fill inlet.
