The incident began around 9:30 a.m. when a resident on Smith Road contacted authorities. The caller reported seeing a male displaying erratic behavior while armed with a rifle and a pistol, also wearing a shotgun bandolier. The resident, who only knew the suspect as “Jake,” alerted police due to concerns about the man’s past, as he had previously indicated being a felon.

Upon arrival, PSP officers attempted to make contact with Dittenhafer, who fled the scene on foot. Officers were able to apprehend him a short time later. During a search of the area, police discovered firearms and what appeared to be pipe bombs in Dittenhafer’s possession. A specialized PSP unit was called to the scene to safely remove the explosives. The unit successfully located and secured two pipe bombs, one in a vehicle and another in a backpack near another vehicle.
