HAGERSTOWN, MD News (4/17/2024) – The GIANT Company has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting student nutrition by presenting Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) with a generous donation of $28,113.52 as part of its Feeding School Kids initiative. This contribution marks an increase from last year’s donation of $23,896, showcasing the company’s ongoing dedication to addressing food insecurity among schoolchildren.

Representatives from The GIANT Company, including Amy Bishop, Danielle Kaetzel, and Mikel Thomas, joined WCPS Food & Nutrition Services Director Mike Embly and Assistant Supervisor Chelsey White for the presentation of the donation. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of community partnerships in addressing crucial issues such as childhood hunger.

The impact of these donations on the local community, particularly during the summer months, cannot be overstated. In 2023, WCPS provided a total of 58,078 lunches and 30,886 breakfast meals to children, with distribution facilitated through various channels including summer school programs, community partners such as the YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs, as well as WCPS Meal Machine sites. Such initiatives play a vital role in ensuring that children have access to nutritious meals even when school is not in session.

The Feeding School Kids initiative operates through the collective support of customers at GIANT, MARTIN’S, and GIANT Heirloom Market stores. Customers contribute to the cause by rounding up their purchases to the nearest dollar, purchasing reusable bags, or converting their CHOICE points into donations for their local public school districts’ food programs. Now in its fourth year, the initiative has seen remarkable success, with The GIANT Company and its customers donating over $7.5 million through 2024.

By engaging customers in the initiative, The GIANT Company not only raises funds but also fosters a sense of community involvement and responsibility. Through these collective efforts, individuals are empowered to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students who rely on school meal programs for essential nutrition.

The partnership between The GIANT Company and WCPS exemplifies the positive impact that can be achieved when businesses and educational institutions work together to address societal challenges. Beyond providing financial support, such collaborations facilitate the exchange of ideas and resources, ultimately leading to more effective solutions.

Looking ahead, it is evident that initiatives like Feeding School Kids will continue to play a crucial role in combating food insecurity among schoolchildren. As communities come together to support these efforts, the collective impact will be felt not only in improved nutrition but also in the overall well-being and academic success of students across the region.
