FREDERICK, MD News (4/17/2024) – Maryland law enforcement officials have filed charges against Geylani Yilmaz following an altercation that occurred on March 13, 2024, in Frederick County. Yilmaz stands accused of assault in the second degree and willful destruction of property, as detailed in a statement of charges filed by Frederick County D/SGT Jonathan Shatlock on April 16, 2024.

The incident unfolded at approximately 11:00 AM when officers from the Frederick Police Department responded to reports of an assault at the intersection of Monocacy Boulevard and E Patrick St. Upon arrival, officers found Samuel Rosenbloom and local YouTube personality Shaun Porter, who had been participating in a peaceful protest, alleging that they had been assaulted by another individual.

According to witness statements and surveillance footage, Yilmaz allegedly confronted Rosenbloom and Porter, leading to a physical altercation. Rosenbloom reported being punched by Yilmaz, resulting in injuries including a concussion. Additionally, Yilmaz is accused of damaging Porter’s cellphone during the altercation.

Off-duty Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Chad Atkins witnessed the assault and attempted to apprehend the suspect, but Yilmaz fled the scene. Despite efforts by law enforcement to locate him, Yilmaz evaded capture initially.

Subsequent investigation led to the identification of Yilmaz as the suspect. Surveillance footage from nearby establishments, including a gas station and a fast-food restaurant, provided crucial evidence linking Yilmaz to the incident.

Following interviews with both Yilmaz and the victims, law enforcement officials compiled evidence supporting the charges against Yilmaz. Yilmaz asserted that he had approached the protesters with the intention of recording them, but a confrontation ensued when Rosenbloom allegedly seized his cellphone. Yilmaz admitted to retaliating physically, citing self-defense.

Porter, one of the victims, reported that his cellphone was irreparably damaged during the altercation, estimating its value at $900 along with a $60 case.

Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, law enforcement officials are seeking a criminal summons for Yilmaz. The charges include assault in the second degree and willful destruction of property.
