HAGERSTOWN, MD News (4/3/2024) – Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) is gearing up for a significant undertaking – a districtwide strategic planning process aimed at shaping the future trajectory of the school system. Scheduled for April 18, 2024, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., a community forum discussion will be held at South Hagerstown High School, welcoming students, parents, WCPS staff, and community members to participate.

The forum promises an interactive platform for attendees to share their perspectives on various aspects concerning the school system, community dynamics, and public education within Washington County. Structured small group activities and discussions will facilitate an engaging exchange of ideas, fostering a collaborative environment for constructive feedback. Furthermore, in the days following the forum, a public survey will be available to broaden the scope of input from the community.

“As we begin to build out strategic plan, it’s critical to include the voices of our students, staff, families, and community members and empower them to actively shape the future of our schools,” said Dr. David Sovine, Superintendent of Schools.

Central to this initiative is the integration of diverse viewpoints into the strategic plan. WCPS has enlisted the expertise of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) to spearhead the development of this plan. Collaborating closely with WCPS, HMH consultants are tasked with orchestrating engagement efforts and gathering stakeholder input crucial for shaping the district’s roadmap.

We need your help to stay paywall free

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.

If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.

Will you be one of the 5%?

The strategic planning process will be overseen by a 50-member design team comprising stakeholders from various educational and community backgrounds. Beyond the community forum and survey, HMH will facilitate individual and small group discussions to ensure comprehensive insights into the strengths and growth opportunities within the school system.

Updates on the strategic plan’s progress will be shared with the Board of Education during public business meetings slated for April, May, and June. The final iteration of the plan is expected to be submitted in July 2024.

By soliciting input from a wide array of stakeholders, WCPS aims to craft a strategic plan that not only reflects the aspirations of the community but also provides a robust framework for decision-making. This collaborative endeavor underscores the commitment to prioritizing initiatives, optimizing resource allocation, and adapting to evolving educational paradigms.
