HAGERSTOWN, MD News (3/27/2024) – In a celebration of artistic expression and inclusivity, fifteen students from Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) have been honored as winners of the 2023-2024 Middle School Disability Awareness Art Contest. Organized jointly by Tri-State Civitan and WCPS, the competition encouraged students to channel their creativity into pieces that encapsulated the theme: “There is Ability in Every Disability.”

The contest, which embraced participation from both general education and Connections students, featured distinct poster categories for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, alongside an open-design category that welcomed a diverse array of artistic mediums and formats, from traditional sketches to sculptures and collages.
Among the notable winners, Autumn Lauf from Clear Spring Middle emerged as the recipient of the prestigious “Best Overall” accolade, underscoring her exceptional talent and insight into the theme. Lauf’s artistic prowess was also recognized in the 8th-grade poster category, where her work stood out alongside other commendable entries.
The results of the competition not only reflect the dedication and creativity of the students involved but also serve as a testament to the supportive environment fostered within the Washington County community. By showcasing their artwork, these young talents have not only demonstrated their artistic abilities but have also contributed to raising awareness about disability inclusivity.

As part of the celebration, all entries, including both finalists and winners, are currently on display at the Valley Mall until April 2nd, coinciding with Disabilities Awareness Month. This public exhibition not only showcases the students’ creativity but also invites the community to engage with and appreciate their artwork.
At its core, the Middle School Disability Awareness Art Contest exemplifies the mission of Civitan International, an organization dedicated to volunteer service and community outreach.
