HAGERSTOWN, MD News (3/18/2024) – Norma Kelley, a dedicated bus driver serving multiple schools within the Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) system, has been honored as the 2024 Educational Support Personnel (ESP) of the Year. With 11 years of service to WCPS, Kelley has consistently exemplified commitment and care towards the students she transports daily.

WCPS Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Sovine praised Kelley’s contribution, highlighting the crucial role of educational support personnel in shaping students’ experiences. As one of the first and last WCPS staff members to interact with students each day, Kelley’s demeanor and dedication help set a positive tone for students as they embark on and conclude their school days.

In recognition of her outstanding service, Kelley was awarded a weekend stay at Savage River Lodge, generously sponsored by Albright, Crumbacker, Moul & Itell Certified Public Accountants and Business Consultants. Additionally, WCPS provided Kelley with $1,500 to further support her essential role within the school district.

The announcement of Kelley’s achievement coincided with the acknowledgment of other exemplary WCPS support personnel. Among the finalists were Shannon Gronholm, representing Food and Nutrition Services; Amy Moats, representing Administrative Support; Krista Stotler, representing Maintenance & Operations; and Samantha Strasser, representing Student Support.

Shannon Gronholm, Senior Manager of Food and Nutrition Services, has been instrumental in ensuring students have access to nutritious meals for 12 years. Amy Moats, with a diverse background spanning roles such as Special Education Paraprofessional and School Secretary, has positively impacted students for over a decade. Krista Stotler, the Head Custodian at Clear Spring Elementary, has dedicated 19 years to maintaining a clean and safe environment for students and staff. Samantha Strasser, a Special Education Connections Paraprofessional, has served students at Marshall Street School for a decade.

Each finalist received recognition for their invaluable contributions to WCPS, along with prizes generously provided by local establishments including Black Rock Bar & Grill, Cannon Coffee, D&G Liquors, Personal Note Cards by Drista, Regal Cinemas, Stone Werks Coffee & Sweets, and Warehouse Cinemas. Additionally, WCPS awarded each finalist $500 to further support their roles within the school district.

The acknowledgment of these exceptional individuals underscores the importance of the entire support network within WCPS. From bus drivers ensuring safe transportation to custodians maintaining clean facilities and administrative staff providing essential services, every member plays a vital role in the holistic educational experience of students.
