HAGERSTOWN, MD News (2/19/2024 ) – Brook Lane, a prominent non-profit mental health system in western Maryland, will mark a significant milestone with the inauguration of its Child & Adolescent Residential Unit on March 7th. Situated in Washington County, this new facility caters to adolescents aged 8 to 17, addressing the pressing demand for extended psychiatric care outside traditional hospital settings.

The decision to establish this residential unit stemmed from a recognized necessity to support adolescents who often faced prolonged stays in hospitals for psychiatric treatment across Maryland. The initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the State of Maryland’s Behavioral Health Administration, holds promise for replication and expansion to serve a broader demographic in the future.

Funded by the Senator George C. Edwards Fund, the renovation and establishment of the residential unit signify a proactive response to alleviate the strain on local emergency departments and mitigate overcrowding in Brook Lane’s child and adolescent acute care wing.

With its comprehensive range of services, including partial hospitalization, Title 1 special education schools, outpatient psychiatry, therapy, and specialized programs like InSTEP for substance use treatment, Brook Lane continues to play a pivotal role in fostering mental wellness across the region.
