Rockville, MD News (1/2/2024) – A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 2.3 was reported approximately 3 km (1.86 miles) west of Rockville in the early hours of the morning at 12:51 AM, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS). While the seismic event was relatively small, approximately 1,000 individuals reported feeling the tremors, with reports extending as far as Towson and Hagerstown.

The USGS, responsible for monitoring and reporting seismic activity, recorded the earthquake at 15.3 km (9.5 miles) deep. Fortunately, no reports of damage or injuries have been received at this time. Emergency services have not issued any alerts or warnings in connection with the incident.

Residents in the affected areas reported feeling the tremors, but the magnitude of 2.3 suggests that the seismic activity was unlikely to cause significant structural damage. It’s not uncommon for minor earthquakes to occur in various regions, and in this case, the impact seems to have been limited.

It is noteworthy to mention that the last significant earthquake in the vicinity occurred in 2011 near Mineral, West Virginia, with a magnitude of 5.8. That seismic event caused noticeable damage to prominent landmarks in the Washington, D.C. area, including the Washington Monument and the National Cathedral.

In contrast, the recent earthquake near Rockville appears to be of much lower magnitude, and there were no reported injuries or damage.
