MARYLAND News (8/3/2023) – The Maryland Office of Home Energy Programs (OHEP) is now offering energy assistance grants to help households with low incomes pay down monthly utility bills and avoid service disconnections. The income eligibility limits have been raised, making it possible for more families to qualify for assistance, even if they were ineligible in the past. Those who qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits may also be eligible for an energy assistance grant. Applicants do not need a turn-off notice to qualify for OHEP benefits.

The office encourages applicants to apply for assistance before receiving a turn-off notice, enabling the funds to be applied to their accounts as soon as possible. To apply, applicants will need various documents, including a copy of their photo identification, proof of residency, Social Security cards for all household members (including children), proof of household’s total gross income for the last 30-day period, as well as copies of their most recent utility bill and heating fuel bill or receipt if available. It is essential to upload all documents with the application, as separate submissions will cause delays.OHEP grants are paid directly to the utility companies to help lower monthly bills and prevent service disconnections.

Eligible households can receive energy assistance once every program year from July 1 to June 30.To apply for the energy assistance grant, interested individuals can request a paper application by calling 1-800-332-6347 or download the application from the official OHEP website (https://dhs.maryland.gov/office-of-home-energy-programs/).

There are several methods to submit the application and required documentation, including online at https://mymdthink.maryland.gov/home/, drop boxes at local Home Energy Offices, mail-in applications to local Home Energy Offices, or visiting the nearest Home Energy Office in person. For additional information or to check the status of an application online, applicants can log into their myMDTHINK account or visit their local Home Energy Office. For those in need of energy assistance, this program offers valuable support to alleviate financial burdens and maintain essential utility services. The Maryland Office of Home Energy Programs continues to prioritize helping low-income households in their energy needs.
