Hagerstown Duplex Fire Displaces 11 Residents, Causes Significant Damage

A fire that erupted on Chestnut Street in Hagerstown on September 24, 2026, has left 11 residents displaced and caused an estimated $50,000 in damages, according to a notice from the Maryland State Fire Marshal. The incident, which occurred at a two-story duplex located at 916 Chestnut Street, was quickly brought under control by the Hagerstown City Fire Department.

The fire, discovered by an occupant at approximately 10:56 AM, originated in a second-floor bedroom. Preliminary investigations point to an accidental cause stemming from an electrical issue. The blaze required a one-alarm response, with 35 firefighters on the scene working to extinguish the flames. Control of the fire was established within 15 minutes of their arrival. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported among the residents or responding personnel.

The extensive damage to the structure is estimated at $40,000, with an additional $10,000 in damages to the contents within the duplex. A critical factor noted in the investigation was the absence of smoke alarms in the affected property, highlighting a significant safety concern. The American Red Cross is currently assisting the displaced families with immediate needs.
