Washington County Appoints Longtime Engineer David A. Mason as New Environmental Management Director

Washington County, MD – The Washington County Board of County Commissioners has announced the appointment of David A. Mason, P.E., as the new Division Director of Environmental Management. This appointment, effective September 15, 2026, signifies a continuation of experienced leadership within the county’s environmental sector. Mason’s extensive background, spanning over two decades with Washington County Government, includes significant expertise in engineering, environmental management, and solid waste operations, preparing him to guide the division’s future initiatives.

Mason’s career with Washington County began in October 2004, initially serving as a Civil Engineer in the Engineering Department. His career progression saw him move to the Department of Water Quality in 2007 as an Environmental Engineer, where he further developed his skills in water resource management. A pivotal step in his career came in 2014 when he was appointed Deputy Director of Environmental Management within the Department of Solid Waste. In this capacity, he played a crucial role in shaping and executing the county’s environmental programs and solid waste strategies.

Throughout his tenure, Mason has consistently taken on roles with increasing responsibility, cultivating a deep and comprehensive understanding of the county’s engineering, environmental protection, and solid waste management systems. His experience working collaboratively across various county departments has provided him with a holistic perspective on the effectiveness of current environmental programs and the critical importance of sustainable resource management. Before dedicating his career to Washington County, Mason gained valuable experience working for two private engineering firms, focusing on structural and transportation engineering. He established his engineering career in the region after relocating to Washington County in 1996 from Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Mason holds a degree in Civil Engineering Technology from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, graduating in 1996. His professional affiliations include membership in the Maryland Recycling Network and the County Engineers Association of Maryland, where he previously contributed to the Board of Directors. As the new Division Director of Environmental Management, Mason will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and comprehensive oversight of the county’s environmental management operations. His long-standing commitment to Washington County, combined with his robust experience in engineering, water quality, and solid waste management, is expected to drive the continued enhancement of the county’s environmental programs and services.
