Washington County Public Schools Invites Community to Discuss Budget and Future Initiatives

Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) is launching a new series of community engagement sessions aimed at fostering dialogue and gathering input on key educational topics. The “Community Matters” initiative will feature Dr. Gary Willow, the newly appointed Superintendent of Schools, who will lead discussions designed to inform residents about the school system’s operations and future planning. The series kicks off with a session focused on understanding the school budget, offering residents an opportunity to learn about WCPS’s financial structure and priorities.

The next “Community Matters” event, scheduled for September 8, 2026, at 6:00 PM at the Center for Education Services, will delve into the intricacies of the school budget. Attendees will gain insight into how Washington County Public Schools is funded, the factors that influence budget planning, and the significant costs and financial challenges the district faces. The session will also include an interactive activity designed to help participants consider the trade-offs involved in budget decisions, providing a platform for community members to share their priorities. This input is intended to guide future budget discussions and decisions for the school system.

This initial session is just one of several planned for the “Community Matters” series. Future discussions will cover a range of important topics relevant to students, families, staff, and the broader community. Looking ahead, an event on October 28, 2026, at North Hagerstown High School will center on “Preparing Students for the Future,” examining academic achievement, career readiness, and life skills. The series will conclude on November 12, 2026, at Williamsport High School with a discussion on “Safe, Supportive, and Connected Schools,” focusing on attendance, inclusion, school climate, and substance abuse. Each session aims to provide transparency and solicit community feedback to shape the direction of WCPS.
