Washington County Government, through a recent announcement, has invited the public to a significant ceremony marking a key initiative of its yearlong 250th Anniversary celebration. Residents, community partners, and visitors are invited to attend the official dedication of the Washington County 250th Anniversary Time Capsule, scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. The event is set to take place at the Marty Snook Park Pool Area, located at 17901 Halfway Boulevard in Hagerstown.
This time capsule is intended to preserve a collection of artifacts, photographs, letters, and other memorabilia that represent Washington County in 2026, encapsulating the spirit, achievements, and history of the region. The capsule is slated to remain sealed for fifty years, with its intended opening coinciding with the nation’s 300th anniversary celebration in 2076. The dedication ceremony is designed to honor the individuals, organizations, and events that have contributed to the county’s development over its 250-year history, while simultaneously capturing a snapshot of contemporary life for future inhabitants. This initiative provides an opportunity for reflection on the county’s past and a chance to consider its future trajectory. The time capsule itself serves as a tangible link to the community’s legacy, promising future generations insight into the people, traditions, and accomplishments that define Washington County today.

The successful realization of this project has been aided by generous contributions from local businesses. Washington County has expressed its gratitude to Richard Ward, owner of The Richards-Wilbert Company, for donating the burial vault that will permanently house the time capsule. Additionally, the county extended its thanks to the Osborne family and Osborne Funeral Home for their crucial assistance in coordinating the donation and managing the logistical aspects of this endeavor, which is helping to create a lasting tribute to the county’s history.
Residents are strongly encouraged to participate in this ceremony as it represents a significant conclusion to one of the county’s primary 250th Anniversary programs. The event will serve as a commemoration of shared history and will ensure that a record of life in Washington County at this moment is preserved for those who will reside there in the future.
