Frederick residents are invited to join a collective moment of national remembrance as the City of Frederick participates in “Sharing the Spirit of America: A Nationwide Reading of the Declaration of Independence” on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. This event, organized in collaboration with the Frederick County U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration’s initial public reading, which occurred in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776. The City of Frederick announced that this initiative, originating from the Hawaii America250 Commission, will see participants in 744 locations across all 50 states, five U.S. territories, the District of Columbia, U.S. Minor Outlying Islands, and even in other countries, all engaging in the reading simultaneously.
The local observance is scheduled to take place on the steps of Frederick City Hall, located at 101 N. Court Street. The community is encouraged to gather starting at 5:30 p.m., with opening remarks set to begin at 5:45 p.m. The ceremonial reading of the Declaration of Independence will commence promptly at 6:00 p.m. This event is free of charge, suitable for all ages, and open to the general public. Refreshments will be provided, and no prior registration or RSVP is necessary. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to City Hall.
