A public appeal has been launched to ensure a dignified farewell for Nelson Moon, a local U.S. Army veteran who has passed after facing an aggressive battle with a rare form of cancer. His younger sister, Bre, has initiated a fundraising effort to cover the costs associated with his funeral and memorial services, aiming to honor his lifelong dedication to service and his profound impact on those around him.
Moon, who served in the U.S. Army from 2001, deployed to Kuwait and Iraq during a critical period in American history. Upon completing his honorable service, he returned home not seeking accolades, but rather to dedicate himself to supporting his family and loved ones. He was described as a constant source of support, a protector, and a friend, embodying a selfless spirit that touched many lives.
However, years after his military service, Moon was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive signet ring cell adenocarcinoma. The cancer significantly impacted his esophagus, gastroesophageal junction, stomach, and pancreas, with potential lymph node involvement. His journey through the medical system was very challenging, involving initial care through the VA and subsequent transfers to facilities like Walter Reed and eventually WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center for specialized treatment.
Moon’s treatment began after a delay of nearly two months, and he later experienced a severe and rare reaction to a chemotherapy medication, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), which led to seizures and a significant decline in his health. Unfortunately, Moon passed on June 25th.

While the VA will pay for the internment and plot, the family still must pay for other funeral and memorial service expenses, specifically embalming, casket, and memorial service. The family’s goal is to provide Moon with a farewell that reflects his honorable service and the love he gave so freely.
The family has expressed their gratitude for any support, prayers, or shares that can be provided during this incredibly difficult time. They emphasize that Nelson Moon’s life was characterized by showing up for others, whether as a soldier, a son, a brother, or a friend. While the VA covers interment and plot costs, the family must bear the expenses for embalming, casketing, and any memorial or viewing services prior to the funeral.
Those wishing to help with final expenses can donate through GoFundMe.
